Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), has run afoul of former President Donald Trump‘s camp over the recent speakership drama with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
Greene has emerged as Johnson’s biggest Republican foe in Congress after his vote to pass a spending bill seen as unfavorable by many Republicans. She introduced a motion to vacate the speakership, a threat that doesn’t appear to be gaining any traction with Republicans but could pose a problem for Johnson soon.
In Johnson’s favor, the country’s most powerful Republican and his allies are reportedly unhappy with the threats to undercut the speaker. Among those opposing the move are Trump and his camp, who have privately criticized her over the move, according to Politico.
“One hundred percent distraction. Unwanted. And just stupid,” a Trump insider told the outlet. “We’re not going to get trapped into this cycle of bull**** that comes out of members of the House.”
“It’s fair to say we don’t think she’s being constructive,” another Trump insider said. “The internal fighting is not appreciated by [Trump].”
“It’s no way to run a party; it’s no way to run a House,” they added. “You can’t work in that environment.”
The overriding fear is that renewed speakership drama will hurt Republicans’ reputation just months before the election, hurting their chances at keeping the House.
The public dysfunction within House Republicans has worried many, especially those in vulnerable swing states. The one point they are mostly united on is a desire not to repeat the chaotic speakership drama of last year. Greene’s closest ally in Congress, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), has pushed back against her motion to vacate the speakership.
