NextImg:How liberals mislead about deportations to delegitimize them - Washington Examiner

Liberal media and Democratic politicians are purposely misleading people about deportations. More specifically, they are trying to emotionally manipulate voters by leaving out key details about the people being deported or the circumstances of their deportations. This is because they view almost all deportations as illegitimate.

This has been most prevalent in the coverage of “Maryland man” Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Abrego Garcia has been painted as a “Maryland father” who was mistakenly deported, with the goal of such coverage being to convince people that he was legally living in Maryland and should never have been deported. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) called the deportation an “illegal abduction.”

In reality, Abrego Garcia has been an illegal immigrant ever since he entered the country in 2012. In 2019, an immigration judge ordered Abrego Garcia be deported, with the caveat that he could not be deported to El Salvador, his country of origin, where he claimed he would be in danger. Thus, Abrego Garcia was not a “Maryland man” but a Salvadoran man, one who had no right to be in the country and whose deportation was only a mistake because he was sent to El Salvador rather than any other country on the face of the Earth.

The “Maryland father” framing is designed to invoke images of a suburban father, ripped away from his family by an evil administration. “The cruelty is the point,” goes the liberal mantra about President Donald Trump. But Abrego Garcia has been credibly accused of being a member of MS-13, received a domestic violence restraining order from his wife, and was stopped driving a car owned by a human smuggler while transporting eight people who claimed his address as their own. That hasn’t stopped the woe is he framing, or the Democratic politicians tripping over themselves to go hang out with him in El Salvador.

Abrego Garcia is not the only one who has received this whitewashing, though. Here is how the New York Times framed another deportation: “21 Years Later, Deported Back to a ‘Home’ He Barely Knew.” The piece features a picture of Nascimento Blair, the illegal immigrant in question, looking solemnly out a window. “Nascimento Blair returned home in shackles,” the piece leads, informing us that “Still dazed, he looked out of place” and that “He had earned two college degrees, started a trucking business, mentored people released from prison, cared for a fiancée with breast cancer, taken classes at Columbia University.”

‘That is so tragic,’ you might say to yourself, which is the purpose of the pity puff piece. That is, until you read the details of Blair’s kidnapping conviction. Blair and two other men held a teenager against his will after the teenager stole money and marijuana from Blair’s apartment. (Blair had a “side hustle” dealing marijuana). He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for kidnapping.

The framing continues in story after story. ABC7, the local ABC affiliate for Los Angeles, reported the following headline: “Man who killed 2 teens in Seal Beach DUI crash to be released from prison early.” In this case, “man” is an illegal immigrant who had been deported once before and was only served three years behind bars thanks to California’s weak criminal “justice” system.

You may think it’s a semantic game to complain that ABC7 did not identify him as an illegal immigrant, but ABC7 does not want to feed into narratives that justify deportations for illegal immigrants. That was evident in another post, where the outlet bemoaned that “A Pomona father was detained outside his Pomona business on the same day that an ICE raid targeted over a dozen day laborers at a Home Depot.”

That Pomona man was an illegal immigrant from Mexico, who had been deported in 2009 and then illegally entered the country again just three years later. His arrest was the result of him and other illegal immigrants being identified during an operation to deport an illegal immigrant with an active arrest warrant. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, “Several of those apprehended had prior charges, including child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, immigration violations, and DUI.”

This kind of “reporting” is not limited to details about the illegal immigrants themselves. The FBI arrested Hannah Dugan, a Wisconsin judge, after she helped an illegal immigrant escape her courtroom to avoid Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The framing from both liberal media outlets and Democratic politicians has been predictable: Donald Trump is arresting judges. Listen to Democrats such as Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin, and this action is a threat to the separation of powers and proof that Trump views himself as a king.

The details are harder to find, a deliberate attempt to mask Dugan’s conduct and paint the situation as Trumpian fascism. According to an FBI agent, Dugan adjourned the illegal immigrant’s case without informing the state attorney (who was in the courtroom) to help usher him out of the building through a nonpublic area.

Moreover, the alleged victims of that illegal immigrant, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, were also present. Flores Ruiz was facing three counts of battery, having been accused of punching a man 30 times and shoving the man’s girlfriend, as well as battering a third person trying to break up the fight. Those victims fear retaliation from Flores Ruiz or his family, which apparently did not factor into Dugan’s decision to try and usher him to freedom rather than face justice for his alleged crimes or the fact that he entered the country illegally.

And to return to the “Maryland father” framing of Abrego Garcia’s case, we have learned that liberal media and Democrats don’t want to deport antisemites who take part in the harassment of Jews. Such is the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, who had his status as a legal permanent resident revoked. This was framed as a free speech issue by liberal media and Democratic politicians, who decried the cruelty of arresting Khalil while his wife was pregnant.

Khalil was also a leader of a student group that advocates “global intifada” and “armed resistance” by Hamas. The New York Times itself reported that the group was “openly supporting militant groups fighting Israel and rescinding an apology it made after one of its members said the school was lucky he wasn’t out killing Zionists.” And yet, even now, MSNBC calls this an attack on free speech as the focus of its coverage.

If we can’t deport violent criminals in the country illegally, and we can’t deport anti-American, antisemitic terrorist supporters who turn Ivy League universities into antisemitic cesspools, because they happen to be fathers, who is allowed to be deported?

SEATTLE SPENDS MILLIONS ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AS TRUMP ADMIN SEEKS TO DENY FUNDS

There lies the point of this kind of coverage. The details of these cases are purposefully obfuscated by “journalists” and by the Democrats, who look to capitalize on these stories because they want to delegitimize any and all deportations. Illegal immigrants are boiled down to “Maryland man” or “Pomona man” to avoid any discussion of what laws they broke or how many times they have been deported. Crimes such as kidnapping or battery are dismissed, downplayed, or ignored so that they can try to create sympathy for the illegal immigrant who committed them or the judges trying to help them escape.

The conclusion they want people to reach is that all of these deportations or accompanying actions are cruel. The conclusion people should be reaching is that liberal media and Democratic politicians would rather deceive you than reverse course on their open borders view of immigration.
