A Houston Police Sergeant suffered multiple gunshot wounds during a shootout, resulting in the death of the suspect early Saturday.
The 17-year veteran of the force had been tracking down a couple, of whom the man was suspected of multiple robberies and aggravated assault, around 1 a.m. CST. The man had parked at a hotel near Harwin Drive, so the sergeant was scoping out the nearby strip mall at the time of the shooting. As the sergeant sat in the patrol car's front passenger seat, the suspect approached the car from the sergeant's side and fired multiple shots into the vehicle.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner referred to the incident as an "ambush-style attack" during a press conference Saturday. Finner confirmed that even though his sergeant was struck in his arms, legs, and even once on his ballistic vest, he returned fire and killed the suspect on the scene. The suspect was struck multiple times.
"Thank God he’s gonna be OK," Finner said. "But he’s in with the best doctors in the world, and they’re taking care of him."
According to Finner, the unidentified sergeant is "a top-notch guy." During this investigation, police were also able to locate and detain the woman of the couple that had been casing businesses to rob. Finner applauded the sergeant's calmness and professionalism in bringing the investigation to an end.

"I am very proud — not proud that people died — but I’m proud of the work our officers do," Finner said.
Police have not revealed the identity of the suspect in order to inform his family first. He was described as a Hispanic man in his twenties.
