NextImg:House passes rule for debt ceiling bill with the help from Democrats

The House advanced the rule for the debt ceiling bill, setting up a vote on final passage later Wednesday evening.

The rule vote is a procedural motion that sets up how the bill will be heard on the floor. The majority party usually carries the rule without any minority support. But with 29 Republicans voting against the rule in an attempt to try and block the bill, Democrats had to vote for it to help get it across the line. Ultimately, 52 Democrats joined most Republicans in voting yes.

BIDEN WORKS TO PUSH DEBT CEILING DEAL OVER THE FINISH LINE

Members of the House Freedom Caucus and other Republicans have been vocally against the bill, saying it doesn’t do enough to cut spending and gives President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats a “blank check” to continue spending as much as they want.

Now, the full debt ceiling bill will be voted on around 8:30 p.m. More than 30 Republicans have said they are against the bill, and a handful of Democrats have signaled they will also vote against the bill.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has said Democrats will vote for the bill, but Republicans must get at least 150 members of their Conference to vote for the bill in order for it to pass.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has said he’s not worried about getting the bill off the floor and sending it over to the Senate.
