The House Oversight and Reform Committee is investigating the details surrounding how cocaine was able to be brought into the White House and is requesting a staff briefing on White House security measures from the Secret Service.

Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent a letter to the director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, on Friday informing her that the committee is investigating the matter to asses “security practices and determine whose failures led to an evacuation of the building and finding of the illegal substance.”

On Sunday, while President Joe Biden and his family were out of town, an unknown white powdery substance was found in the West Wing, leading to a brief White House evacuation. The Secret Service later confirmed that after numerous tests the substance was, in fact, cocaine.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has claimed the cocaine was found in “a heavily traveled area of the campus of the White House,” adding that it's where West Wing visitors come through.

“The presence of illegal drugs in the White House is unacceptable and a shameful moment in the White House’s history,” Comer said in a statement. “Congress funds White House security procedures, and the Secret Service has a responsibility to maintain effective safety protocols. This incident and the eventual evacuation of staff now clearly raises concerns about the level of security maintained at the White House.”

Comer requested that the Secret Service provide committee staff with a briefing on the security measures and processes in order to assist the committee in its investigation.

This is one of the numerous investigations the House has opened into the Biden administration this Congress.

House Oversight, Ways and Means, and Judiciary Committees are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Hunter Biden’s plea deal following whistleblower testimony alleging that the Justice Department interfered in his criminal investigation.

Oversight is also currently investigating unverified claims from an FBI-generated FD-1023 tip sheet from a paid FBI informant alleging that Hunter Biden and then Vice-President Joe Biden were involved in a multi-million foriegn bribery scheme from the head of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company where Hunter Biden sat on the board.

“The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate ‘any matter’ at ‘any time’ under House Rule X,” Comer said in the letter.
