The House Republican Conference shot down a rule change put forward by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) that would have raised the threshold to advance a nominee for House speaker out of conference from a simple majority to 217.
With the proposed rule change shot down, the House could advance a candidate out of conference and bring them to the floor as early as today, as all it will take is a simple majority to advance a nominee out of conference.

Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR), who’s endorsed House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), made a motion to table the amendment and it passed, according to a source familiar.
This is a big win for Scalise and his supporters, who were against the rule change and actively whipping against it, while House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and his supporters were for the rule change.
