Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are set to visit the southern border at the end of the month after facing criticism from Republicans for missing the panel's field hearing on the border crisis last week.

The Democratic members are expected to meet with local and federal border officials, as well as some nongovernmental organizations and community groups in surrounding border towns. An itinerary for the trip has not yet been set, but the lawmakers are scheduled to visit the towns of Brownsville and McAllen from March 19-21, according to Punchbowl News.

REPUBLICANS’ FIRST HEARING AT SOUTHERN BORDER DESCENDS INTO PARTISAN BICKERING

The trip comes after the committee’s top Democratic members, Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), criticized Republicans for holding a “stunt hearing” outside the border last week, during which Republicans blasted the surge of illegal immigration under the Biden administration.

No Democratic members attended the field hearing, with Nadler and Jayapal accusing Republican leadership of failing to brief them on the matter.

However, Republicans seized on Democrats’ absence, calling it “disgraceful.”

“I think it’s disgraceful that a majority of Democrats refuse to even show up at these hearings. These are full committee hearings — Republican, Democrat,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) at the field hearing. “Citizens are coming, law enforcement officers are coming … talking about the problems that Washington can fix.”

No Judiciary Republicans are expected to join the Democrats’ trip, as it is slated to take place during a House GOP retreat hosted by the Congressional Institute in Orlando.
