The chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security on Wednesday decried the Senate’s “political decision” to set aside the impeachment trial of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and suggested a reason why China is pushing thousands of illegal immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border.

“We recognize their actions as a political action and a political decision,” said Rep. Mark Green [R-TN] of the move by Senate Democrats to ignore action on the House impeachment of Mayorkas.

“Unfortunately, they did what they did,” he said.

During a panel discussion hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies, Green and two committee impeachment lawyers explained their justifications for singling Mayorkas out, but conceded that the case is now over.

Green said that the border crisis brought by Mayorkas and President Joe Biden continues to escalate and is likely to weigh heavily on voters choosing between the president’s open border agenda and promises by challenger and former President Donald Trump to finish building a wall.

Part of the hourlong discussion centered on why Biden made 89 moves to turn the closed border Trump left after his defeat in 2020 into a whirling turnstile letting historic numbers of illegal migrants through.

The discussion also focused on the potential effect of terrorists from the Middle East and China coming across the border.

“This has to be intentional,” Green said of some 30,000 Chinese coming into the United States illegally. “The risk is massive,” he added.

“There’s some benefit out there and we can speculate but no one’s found a smoking gun on it. So be careful to do so. But they can’t be this stupid, right? They’re not this stupid. There’s some benefit to them. And people ought to seriously consider what that benefit is,” said Green.

Pushed to speculate, Green addressed the issue from his background as an Army officer for over 20 years.

“Let me put my military hat on for just a second. I spent 24 years in the United States Army. If I were an enemy to the country, and if I wanted to destabilize the United States in the face of a potential future confrontation, this is exactly what I would do.”

Green pointed to the “Ukraine model” in which Russia sent migrants into Ukraine’s Donbas region before the current war. He said that they “became the saboteurs” when the conflict began.

“I’m not suggesting that in the case of China, particularly, that they’re going to be invading the United States any day soon, but they might very soon invade Taiwan. And if we were to become involved, having the thousands of people here, and again, you’ve asked me to speculate, right. So I am sharing what I would be thinking about as a military guy trying to defend this country, those individuals are here now because of this open, porous border, the catch and release policies, and that is a threat that has to be defended against and prepared for,” he added.
