Following its strong opening weekend, new biblical film His Only Son is making history as fans gift tickets to others in a pay-it-forward fashion.
His Only Son took the box office’s No. 3 spot last weekend as it became the first-ever nationwide theatrical release to be crowdfunded.

The film is being distributed by Angel Studios, the same platform behind The Chosen, and is set to also make history as the first theatrical release to use the studio's “Pay It Forward” software, allowing people to purchase tickets on behalf of others.
“This incredible film is already hitting above its weight, and — between word-of-mouth, strong reviews online, and a surge in people using our ‘Pay it Forward’ technology to buy tickets for others to see, we are expecting a very strong Easter weekend at the box office,” Angel Studios Senior Vice President of Global Distribution Jared Geesey said in a statement.
Director David Helling told the Washington Examiner that he is blown away by the notion of fans buying tickets for others.
“I’m very grateful to the Lord to see that people are so touched by the film that they are willing to pay for others they don’t even know, so that they have the chance to share the same experience with His Only Son," Helling said. “It’s a beautiful picture of loving our neighbor. … And it is a wonderful reminder that the Gospel cannot be bound — it will go forth.”
