Democratic identity politics is a convoluted mess of conflicting and contradictory talking points that will almost always cut against one of the party’s privileged “victim” groups. Even transgenderism, and transgender people are the most protected identity group in Democratic politics, is not immune to the contradictions.

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) was one of several Democrats who recently questioned FBI Director Kash Patel. Hirono was particularly concerned with the physical standards the FBI was applying to female agents. She worried that Patel was “now requiring applicants to be able to do a certain kind of pull-ups, which a lot of women cannot because of physiological differences.” The requirement Hirono was complaining about is that female FBI hopefuls must do one pull-up. (Male applicants must do two to three.)

It is a fascinating complaint, because it cuts to the heart of the debate transgender activists don’t want to have. After all, if there are “physiological differences” between women and men that are so great that Hirono is concerned women cannot do a pull-up, does that not then show that you cannot simply “identify” as the opposite gender and thus become a member of that gender? If there are physiological differences between men and women, why does Hirono believe that men can become women and then compete against women in sports and athletic events, including contact sports?

This has popped up as an issue for Democrats, and will continue to do so as the party alienates men. Back in 2023, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) urged Democrats to pay attention to the “crisis” among young men. (For Murphy and Democrats, it is a crisis of both an increasing number of young men feeling increasingly alienated from society and a political crisis of young men increasingly voting with the GOP.)

In Murphy’s plea for Democrats to care about this issue, he posted the following: “We cannot avoid the biological/evolutionary differences between men and women… Both biology and thousand of years of culture have wired men differently. Policy has to acknowledge that.”

On the one hand, there are “biological” and “evolutionary differences between men and women,” and “biology” has “wired men differently.” On the other hand, Murphy supports an ideology that claims that there are no differences between men and women, doctors simply “assign” you a gender at birth, and that you can choose to be whichever one you want based on nothing but claiming to “identify” that way.

DEMOCRATS GO ALL IN ON SEX CHANGES FOR CHILDREN

Democrats are unable to reconcile these identitarian male and female differences with the fact that their current guiding ideology of transgenderism does not recognize “male” or “female” as meaning anything at all. How can you reach out to young men if you don’t even know what a man is? How can you complain about fitness standards being sexist against women when you claim that any man can become just as much of a woman as any other woman? Democrats don’t know, so they just ignore the fact that they are contradicting themselves.

The transgender movement is the anchor that is sinking the Democratic Party’s political lifeboat, and Democrats are simply too afraid of making the anchor angry to acknowledge that nothing else they say or do can stop the party from sinking.
