NextImg:Hillary Clinton cites 2023 election results as people moving away from 'extremism'

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton claimed Wednesday that one of the takeaways from Tuesday's election results is that voters are moving away from "extremism," after the Republican Party experienced underwhelming election results.

Among the ballot on Tuesday was Ohio Issue 1, in which Ohio residents voted to enshrine the right to abortion and place strict restrictions on the state legislature's capacity to regulate the procedure. Clinton stated that the results from Tuesday night show that "women are standing up for themselves" and that Democrats are "winning a lot of important races."

"And secondly, that people are moving away from extremism," Clinton said in an appearance on The View. "They want to have leaders who are trying to do the best they can to take care of our real problems, not make up stuff and cause all kinds of commotion. And it’s kind of like getting back to the real business of governing."

Clinton praised Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) for winning reelection on Tuesday night, specifically over an ad campaign he ran on the subject of abortion, which featured a woman who was raped by her stepfather at 12 years old and became pregnant.

The 2023 election results are considered to be a test of how the two parties will do in the 2024 presidential election; Clinton was asked if she believed that President Joe Biden was the best candidate for Democrats in 2024, to which she said, "he is" and that Tuesday's results should be good news for the president. Several recent polls, including one that showed former President Donald Trump beat Biden in five battleground states, have caused some Democrats concern over Biden running again.

When asked what would happen if Trump were to become president, Clinton stated that it would be the end of the country "as we know it."

"And I don’t say that lightly," Clinton said.

Beyond Kentucky and Ohio, Virginia Republicans also experienced a disappointing Tuesday, with the party losing control of the state House and failing to regain the state Senate. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) had advocated a 15-week abortion ban in the lead-up to the election, which he would pass if Republicans took the majority of both legislative bodies.

The subject of abortion has become a major focus point for both parties in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in mid-2022. Like the 2023 elections, the 2022 midterm elections also saw underwhelming results for Republicans, with many believing the Supreme Court's decision played a role in the election results.
