In 2009, transgender activist Rachel Crandall-Crocker randomly designated March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, adding one more “holiday” to the list of dozens of others created to show support for members of the LGBT community. In 2021, President Joe Biden recognized March 31, 2021, as Transgender Day of Visibility, becoming the first U.S. president to do so.

Despite the fact that March 31 also happened to be Easter Sunday this year, the most sacred day of the year on the Christian calendar, Biden chose to renew his proclamation on Friday, calling on “all Americans to join us in lifting up the lives and voices of transgender people throughout our nation and to work toward eliminating violence and discrimination based on gender identity.”

The White House released a statement that read: “On Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect Union — where all people are created equal and treated equally throughout their lives.”

“Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans: You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back. Now, therefore, I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was among the many Republicans who blasted Biden over the move. He wrote on X, “Banning sacred truth and tradition — while at the same time proclaiming Easter Sunday as ‘Transgender Day’ — is outrageous and abhorrent.”

Questioned about the White House’s proclamation by a reporter at the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, Biden replied that Johnson had been “thoroughly uninformed,” and he insisted, “I didn’t do that.” Maybe he didn’t. It is possible hes unaware of what his underlings put out on his social media accounts. But if that’s true, that’s even more concerning.

Following the backlash to Biden’s proclamation that quickly ensued, White House spokesman Andrew Bates issued a statement accusing critics of “trying to divide the country.” He wrote: “As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American. Sadly, it’s unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit.”

Biden and his minions tout his Catholic faith when it is politically convenient. But asked to comment on Biden’s faith during a Sunday appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation, Washington D.C.’s Roman Catholic Archbishop Wilton Cardinal Gregory rightly called the president a “cafeteria Catholic.”

“He picks and chooses dimensions of the faith to highlight while ignoring or even contradicting other parts,” he said. “There is a phrase that we have used in the past, a ‘cafeteria Catholic,’ you choose that which is attractive and dismiss that which is challenging.”

Gregory made a good point. For instance, administration officials knew that Biden’s proclamation wouldn’t play well with Hispanic voters, many of whom are deeply religious Christians. And he needs their votes. So, as per Fox News, they chose to omit any mention of Transgender Day of Visibility on La Casa Blanca, the White House’s account for Spanish-speaking constituents on X.

There is but one Easter Sunday, and it has been celebrated by Christians throughout the world for more than two millennia. According to Pew Research, approximately two-thirds of adults in the U.S. identify as Christian. For many of us, the resurrection of Christ following his brutal death upon the cross is the most important day in human history. To diminish its significance by equating it to one of 100 randomly designated transgender holidays seemed like a betrayal.

Over the past three years, this administration has declared war on our system of justice, our fossil fuel industry, our immigration laws, our elections, our social norms, and so much more. But this weekend’s blatant attack on Christianity felt like the opening salvo in a new war. For as long as Christ remains the world’s savior, the government must be subordinate. If His significance can be diminished or even eliminated, the government will reign supreme.

Is it possible that Christianity is going to be the next target of the Biden administration?
