Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker merchandise is only increasing in sales after his controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College.
Butker spoke at the Catholic college last weekend as a member of the faith himself. His comments on the “bad policies and poor leadership” during the coronavirus pandemic, Pride month being likened to a “deadly sin,” premarital relations, and a woman’s role in the home outraged some who heard it.
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives,” Butker said in his speech. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
Now, NFL.com has marked Butker’s jersey as “most popular in Kansas City Chiefs” merchandise. Still, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s jersey is most popular among all men’s jerseys. The team is fresh from their Super Bowl win earlier this year.

However, the league has distanced itself from Butker’s message. The NFL assured fans that Butker’s views “are not those of the NFL as an organization.”
Butker’s speech has over 1 million views on YouTube with 22,000 likes. Meanwhile, other celebrities’ speeches haven’t drawn as much attention. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement speech at Duke University only has some 550,000 views, and musician John Legend only drew some 11,000 views for his speech at Loyola Marymount University.
