NextImg:Harris heads into Democratic nomination process unopposed - Washington Examiner

Vice President Kamala Harris was the only candidate to qualify for the Democratic National Committee’s virtual roll call, ensuring she will be nominated as the Democrats’ 2024 presidential pick over the next week.

All candidates had until Tuesday at 6 p.m. EDT to secure the support of at least 300 delegates in order to appear as an option in the roll-call vote, which is scheduled to conclude on Aug. 7.

According to DNC officials, Harris, who has seen historic influxes of both campaign cash and volunteers since taking over the mantle from President Joe Biden earlier in July, had secured more than 99% of all available delegates Tuesday evening.

Despite rampant speculation about challengers to Harris, the vice president didn’t face any serious competition ahead of the roll call. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had flirted with hopping back into the Democratic primary process but ultimately decided to keep his independent bid, while Marianne Williamson, who relaunched her previously scuttled campaign following Biden’s departure from the race, suspended her operation Tuesday evening.

“We did everything possible to stand for a blitz primary, an open convention and so forth. Yet the way the rules were made there truly was no way, Kamala’s momentum was in full swing, and all we could have done is create noise,” Williamson wrote in a message to her supporters. “I was in the race to create fundamental change, yes — but not as a chaos agent or metaphorical bomb thrower.”

DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison asserted that Democratic politicians, officials, and delegates “stand united in our mission to elect a Democratic nominee who has the experience, the wisdom, and the bold determination to lead our country, and we stand united in our mission to defeat Donald Trump once again.”

“Our delegates have an important responsibility — and opportunity — in the days ahead to cast their history-making ballots for Vice President Harris, ensuring that she will be on the ballot in every state this November,” Harrison added in a lengthy statement. “We look forward to celebrating together with all of our delegates in Chicago, where we will show up in full force as a strong, united Party laser-focused on defeating Donald Trump and JD Vance in November.”

Harris is expected to announce her pick for vice president early next week, and her campaign told reporters Tuesday afternoon that she and her running mate will campaign in seven battlegrounds starting Monday.

Campaign officials told reporters not to read into the states for this slate of campaigning, which includes stops in both Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) is viewed as the odds-on favorite to be selected as Harris’s running mate, followed closely by Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA).
