NextImg:Harris goes after Trump as Florida’s new abortion ban goes into effect: ‘Enough with the gaslighting’ - Washington Examiner

Vice President Kamala Harris heartily attacked former President Donald Trump on Wednesday for paving the way to the state’s new abortion ban.

Trump has vacillated on abortion in recent months, both taking credit for the Supreme Court‘s 2022 decision that rolled back the federal abortion protections included in Roe v. Wade and rankling anti-abortion Republicans by saying he would not sign a national abortion ban into law during a second term.

Meanwhile, Harris, President Joe Biden, and Democrats have made it their top social issue ahead of the general election. Democratic operatives and Biden campaign officials have told reporters that they believe reproductive rights make even states like Florida, which Trump won in both 2016 and 2020, winnable for the president in November.

Harris has emerged as Biden’s top abortion rights surrogate this cycle, and the latest stop on her nationwide reproductive freedom tour brought her to Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, hours after the state’s six-week abortion ban went into effect.

Harris opened her remarks by directly blaming Trump for the more than 20 new abortion bans enacted states after the Dobbs decision, claiming that Florida’s new law is “so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant.”

“The extremists who wrote this ban either don’t know how a woman’s body works or they simply don’t care,” the vice president declared.

“This truly is a healthcare crisis, and Donald Trump is the architect, and, by the way, that is not a fact he hides. In fact, he brags about it,” she added. “The contrast in this election could not be more clear. Basically, under Donald Trump, it would be fair game for women to be monitored and punished by the government. Whereas Joe Biden and I have a different view. We believe the government should never come between a woman and her doctor.”

Harris also claimed that if Trump wins, he would sign a national abortion ban into law, despite his public comments on the topic.

“Enough with the gaslighting because we all know if Donald Trump Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban. And how do we know? Well let’s take a look at the evidence and follow the facts,” she continued. “Congress tried to pass a national abortion ban in 2017, and the then-President Trump endorsed it in 2017 and promised to sign it if it got to his desk.”
