NextImg:Harris calls role in certifying Trump win a ‘sacred obligation’ - Washington Examiner

Vice President Kamala Harris will preside over a joint session in Congress on Monday to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over her last year.

Harris said in a video that her role is a “sacred obligation” in ensuring the strength of our democracy.

“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy, as much as any other principle,” Harris said. “It is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny.”

Throughout her brief presidential campaign, Harris echoed messages that a Trump presidency would be a strong threat to America’s democracy — calling him a “wannabe dictator” and a “petty tyrant.”

White House officials shared this past October that President Joe Biden believed Trump was a fascist.

Harris’s attacks on Trump came following two assassination attempts — one by Ryan Wesley Routh, who shared strong grievances against Trump’s handling of Iran and the rest of the Middle East.

Harris will join past vice presidents Richard Nixon and Al Gore, who lost their bids for president and certified their opponents’ victory.

Four years ago, when Trump lost his bid for reelection, he pressured Vice President Mike Pence to change the election results in Trump’s favor.

“I had no right to overturn the election,” Pence said two years later. “And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the Associated Press that this time around, Trump will raise no qualms with Congress’s certification of the election.

“When Kamala Harris certifies the election results, President Trump will deliver on his promise to serve ALL Americans and will unify the country through success,” she said in a statement.

Federal charges against Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots were dropped by special counsel Jack Smith upon Trump’s election win.

“As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile, and it is up to each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles and to make sure that in America, government always remains of the people, by the people, and for the people,” Harris said.
