Harlan Crow, a GOP megadonor and friend to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, signed an ad thanking University of Texas at Austin administrators for their efforts against protesters.

The full-page ad was included in the Dallas Morning News and Austin American-Statesman and featured other notable signatories like former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, former Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly, and former Texas Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling.

The ad, signed by 37 people, said: “We, the undersigned, thank UT Austin President Jay Hartzell, Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife and the entire Board of Regents for their steadfast commitment to maintaining a safe environment on all University of Texas campuses.”

“UT leadership has provided stable guidance amid the disruptive demonstrations, which have largely been instigated by individuals outside our campuses,” it said. “These demonstrations have sought to silence Jewish students and those committed to academic debate.”

Crow is notable for his status as a major donor to several Republicans and many other candidates. He’s recently donated to former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Dave McCormick’s Senate campaigns, both looking to flip Democratic seats.

Crow has not donated to former President Donald Trump recently, but did donate to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Nikki Haley’s presidential campaigns. Crow has been a political donor since at least 1977.

Crow has also been in the media for his collection of historical, and controversial, memorabilia, which includes a signed copy of Mein Kampf, and his close relationship with Thomas that included lavish vacations and gifts.

UT’s recent protests resulted in 79 arrests, with 45 of those arrested being unaffiliated with the university. The university also confiscated firearms and other weapons as the university dismantled the protesters’ encampment.

The college justified calling in police on the protests by saying they “escalated by becoming physically and verbally combative with Dean of Students’ staff.”

“While other academic institutions have buckled to the destabilizing demands of protesters and outside groups, President Hartzell, Chairman Eltife and the Board of Regents have taken the correct approach to keep UT campuses safe,” the letter said. “We applaud their ongoing efforts to uphold the values and mission of the University of Texas system.”
