Christmas season is finally here, and with it comes a boost in ratings for the Hallmark channel and its myriad of Christmas movies.

The cable network, known for its simple Christmas films, reached an average of 1.53 million viewers on cable between 8-11 p.m. in the week ending Sunday, trailing only ESPN. The boost comes as the Christmas season truly got underway last week after Thanksgiving, along with the network releasing seven new movies for the holiday.

Additionally, Hallmark was the third most-watched channel last week in regards to total-day average viewership, trailing only ESPN and Fox News.

The most-watched Christmas movie that Hallmark debuted last week was A Biltmore Christmas, which garnered 3.1 million viewers. Other Christmas films from the network that earned at least 2 million viewers were Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up with 2.38 million viewers, Holiday Road with 2.13 million, and Catch Me If You Claus with 2 million.

Hallmark's ratings boost last week came a few months after Hallmark Media CEO and President Wonya Lucas announced she would resign at the end of the year. Lucas, who had been with the company for three years, had focused on expanding Hallmark's storytelling through "more diverse and inclusive storylines and characters," a move many conservatives have criticized.

Amid Hallmark's attempt at diversifying its stories and movies, several of its notable stars, including Candace Cameron Bure, have migrated to another Christmas movie channel, Great American Family. The network is considered by many to be a conservative alternative to Hallmark, with Bure signing a deal with GAC Media last year to produce "faith-filled" content, according to a statement from the network.

The Washington Examiner contacted Great American Family for comment.
