Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) is no stranger to exploiting murders to try and emotionally manipulate people into supporting his gun control agenda. But, after the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Murphy instead wants us to hear the shooter out.
Here are Murphy’s comments about the shooting, with emphasis added to the magic word he uses to downplay the murder, “Listen, I’m never going to condone violence. I don’t here. I spend my entire life fighting gun violence because I know that the devastation is enormous. What I see happening in this country, though, is a real visceral anger.”
It isn’t quite the “but” that other Democrats have been using to say that the shooter had a point, but the “though” here serves the same purpose. Yes, gun violence and murder are bad, Murphy is saying, ‘but why are you so mad about this murder and not the people who are being murdered by “the health care industry’”? If you watch Murphy’s full video (available on his Twitter/X feed), the most logical conclusion is that he thinks Thompson deserved it. If you want to be as charitable as possible, Murphy is at least saying that Thompson’s death doesn’t matter. You can watch the video and judge for yourself.
The rationalizing of cold-blooded murder is ghoulish enough, as is standing on the man’s corpse to try and score political points on an issue Democrats think is favorable for them. But it is made so much worse by Murphy’s history of hysterics and moral peacocking on gun control. Murphy has been the Democratic poster child for gun control ghoulishness, blaming every gun death he can find on Republicans who refuse to support his ineffective “solutions.” Murphy has literally said that Republicans in Congress have given a “green light” to shooters for “slaughter after slaughter.”

If this shooting happened to just about anyone else, Murphy would use Brian Thompson’s body as a political cudgel against Republicans before it was even cold. Instead, his gun control kick is taking a backseat to victim blaming and arguing that the shooter was right about healthcare executives like Thompson being the real villain in this story. “Murder is never justified,” Murphy says near the end of the video. “It isn’t. But …”
There is no “but” needed here. The man who killed Thompson did not have a point. He is not sympathetic. He should not be credited with moving the public conversation. You can try to fix the healthcare industry without justifying murder. Yet, even Democrats such as Murphy are willing to trip over themselves and become hypocrites on gun control so they can defend the motivations of a cold-blooded murderer.
