Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) lamented that people do not have the same “empathy and sadness” that actress Selena Gomez showed when she reacted to mass deportations online.

Deportation and repatriation efforts are in full swing across the country. Gomez posted a video of herself crying over the situation and later deleted it. Whitmer appeared Tuesday on ABC News’s The View to claim that “we don’t see the humanity in one another anymore.”

“I saw your segment about Selena Gomez and the lack of empathy,” Whitmer said. “One of the reasons that I wrote the book last year and that we put out a young adult version is because we don’t see the humanity in one another anymore. To not see that video and feel some empathy and sadness for the people that she’s showing concern for, I think, kind of tells you where we are in the world right now.”

The governor said Michigan “has the biggest border crossing in the country,” likely referring to legal crossings. The tunnel between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit is a massive commuter route for Canadians and Americans alike.

When it comes to encounters with illegal immigrants, Michigan is much less popular. From October 2020 to July 2024, there were just over 6,000 encounters in the state, which adds up to about 0.1% of nationwide data. Texas had the most with 45.8%, roughly 4.7 million encounters.

Even President Donald Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, who is overseeing the national efforts to accomplish immigration policies, had the chance to react to Gomez’s video. Homan offered his response during a Monday interview with Fox News’s America Reports and clarified that no families have been arrested at this time.

“We’re going to do this job,” Homan said. “We’re going to enforce the laws of this country. If you don’t like it, then go to Congress and change the law. We’re going to keep going. No apologies. We’re moving forward.”

Gomez’s father is an American-born Mexican. His mother crossed the border in the back of a truck, according to The View host Sara Haines.
