Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) announced that the construction of a new military base in Eagle Pass is almost complete.
Abbott announced the plans to build the forward operating base in February. It will only house Texas National Guard soldiers, who have been guarding the border hot spot since last year. Abbott announced the progress on the construction of the base in a post on X, alongside aerial footage.
“Construction at the Forward Operating Base in Eagle Pass is nearing completion,” he said. “Looking forward to greeting the soldiers as they move in soon.”
The video showed tents, buildings, trucks, and other vehicles, all surrounded by a fence.
The base is set to occupy 80 acres and house at least 1,800 National Guard members. Abbott said it is intended to allow soldiers guarding the border to operate more efficiently.

“This will increase the ability for a larger number of Texas Military Department soldiers in Eagle Pass to operate more effectively and efficiently,” Abbott said at a February press conference.
The base supports Operation Lone Star, Texas’s effort to combat illegal immigration. Since its start in March 2021, Texas forces have apprehended over half a million immigrants.
