NextImg:Gov. Sanders signs order banning 'ridiculous words' like 'pregnant people'

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) announced Thursday that she will ban "ridiculous words" surrounding pregnancy and motherhood in state government documents.

Sanders signed the executive order following a press conference on the matter, flanked by an all-female team. The governor said she was motivated by her own experiences of motherhood after having three children. She noted how she has been stirred to act against the rise of words that were invented for those who do not identify as women despite those women having all the biological signs that come with the sex. The health department has had some instances of people using these terms, according to Sanders.

"They’re using nonsense words to erase women and girls and, more importantly, to erase our voices and our experiences. Today we’re taking a stand against woke nonsense," Sanders said. "What frankly started as a fad among a few grad students has seeped down into corporations, the healthcare industry, and increasingly, state government. It’s demeaning to women, and it needs to stop. In a moment, I’ll sign an executive order banning a number of all sorts of ridiculous words from state government documents. Those include words like 'pregnant people,' 'laboring person,' 'birth giver,' and several other nonsense terms that have cropped up in recent years."

When a reporter asked about the urgency behind the order, Sanders shot back that "there’s always an urgency to doing the right thing." Arkansas Surgeon General Kay Chandler was also present to give her own stamp of approval, as, according to her, political correctness was getting "in the way of science."

The subsequent post on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the executive order was met with support from some and disapproval from others. GOP state Rep. Mary Bentley issued her own statement on the platform and thanked Sanders.

"Biology hasn’t changed," Bentley wrote. "Only women can give birth to children and breastfeed them, it’s so refreshing to have a Governor willing to push back against the crazy people who say otherwise!"

Previously, Sanders has voiced her support for the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which prohibits biological men who identify as transgender women from competing in sports against biological women.
