Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) predicted his fellow Republican lawmakers would unite to pass significant legislation.

Burlison appeared on Fox Report with Jon Scott Saturday following Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) winning the House speakership in a single election. Every Republican but one, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) who voted “present,” supported Johnson. The swiftness demonstrated a rare unity within the party, which Burlison hoped would propel the Republican agenda into the future.

Frankly, the Republican Party over the past few decades has failed its constituency. They failed to achieve touchdowns. I mean, the Democratic Party, to their credit, when they get the ball, when they have the majority, they pass significant legislation. It’s not good legislation for the American people, but we in the Republican Party recognize that things are different. We have high expectations for this Congress, and even though we have a slim majority, I think we are all pulling on the same rope.”

WHICH ITEMS WOULD BE AFFECTED BY TRUMP’S PROPOSED TARIFFS ON CANADA AND MEXICO

The last time the Democratic Party had the majority in both chambers of Congress, while with a Democratic president in office was in January 2021. Before the Republican Party took over both chambers, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which was a $369 billion climate change spending bill, and the Safer Communities Act, which allotted grants for states to enact red flag laws when it comes to gun ownership, among other laws.

However, even when more Republican members of the House and Senate were elected in the 2022 election, there was immediate chaos. It took former Rep. Kevin McCarthy 15 elections to win the speakership, which he only held for 10 months before eight of his fellow party members fomented and voted to vacate him.

Meanwhile Johnson had the endorsement of President-elect Donald Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk. While there initially appeared to be as many as three Republicans that opposed Johnson and threatened the slim majority the party has in the House, Johnson won them over before his election Friday.
