NextImg:GOP lawmakers gamble their future if they oppose Trump’s legislation: Byron York

The Washington Examiner‘s chief political correspondent, Byron York, said Republican lawmakers who voted against the One Big Beautiful Bill Act could “sink” President Donald Trump‘s presidency and their careers.

Several Republicans, such as Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), have expressed criticism over the “big, beautiful bill,” as Trump has urged the Republican Party to pass the bill and get it to his desk. The bill has since cleared the Senate in a 51-50 vote on Tuesday.

York explained that this bill is the “embodiment” of what Trump has sought to achieve since 2015, including tax cuts, funding the border wall, and fulfilling his no tax on tips campaign promise from last year.

“It’s pretty much everything in one bill, and if you’re a Republican lawmaker who has supported Trump through those years, that’s what you got to support now,” York said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle on Monday night. “And I think that it’s going to come down to when we have two, three, four holdouts, do you want to sink Donald Trump’s presidency or not, and by the way, sink your own political career.”

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said the bill will face another challenge after passing the Senate, as the House will decide whether to vote on the bill with the Senate’s changes or make revisions. If the House chooses the latter, it would provide “huge tests” for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and the House Freedom Caucus, as the House could “kill Donald Trump’s agenda,” Fleischer said.

In assessing the “danger” this bill could face in the House, York said Trump knows Massie is “off the table” in winning support for the “big, beautiful bill.” However, he recalled a story Trump told him a couple of months ago about how multiple lawmakers who were a “hard no” in an early vote ultimately changed their tune once Trump spoke to them.

“And so I said, ‘Wow, I thought you were twisting arms and threatening these people,’ and Trump said, ‘No, they just wanted to be talked to,’” York said.

Vice President JD Vance broke the tie in the Senate on the “big, beautiful bill,” with the final tally coming to 51-50. In celebrating the bill’s Senate passage, Vance called it a “big win for the American people,” giving special attention to the “big money” it provides for border security.

Massie’s resistance to supporting the One Big Beautiful Bill Act has led to Trump seeking a primary challenger against him. On Tuesday, Trump said anyone he endorses against Massie will win “by 25 points.”

Meanwhile, billionaire Elon Musk, who fell out with Trump last month, has indicated he will financially support Massie’s reelection bid.
