Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) said it is “leaks” from GOP members that are compromising the Republican Party’s negotiating strategy with Democrats

Upon returning from spring recess, the House will be deciding on legislation for Ukraine aid. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has faced strong pushback from Republican members over his pledge to “take the necessary steps to address the supplemental funding request” for aid in Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. In February, the Senate passed a foreign aid bill including $60 billion for Ukraine.

“I mean, I think it’s unfortunate that Speaker Johnson is kind of in an unwinnable position right now,” Jackson said on Mornings with Maria Bartiromo on Monday. “He tries to come up with a strategy to push this stuff through, but we have a lot of leaks within our conference, so if you declare what we’re going to do publicly within our conference, it leaks out and it undermines the strategy and we start over. That’s happened numerous times.”

Jackson, who is opposed to additional aid to Ukraine, said if the House votes on the Senate’s bill, it will likely be a problem since it will be brought to the floor under suspension of the rules

“If it comes to the floor under suspension, it’s going to need two-thirds of the votes, which means that it’s going to rely on a large number of Democrats to pass, and that’s been our big problem,” Jackson said. “Now, Democrats have incredible leverage and put stuff in there that drives most Republicans away from voting for anything on the floor.”

Leaks under Johnson’s leadership have been a problem from the start, with House Republicans’ phones being confiscated last October.
