A House Republican called out the bipartisan spending deal that would give Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas‘s office a generous $27 million funding increase, considering the conference recently voted to impeach him.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) on Thursday pointed out on X the ironic situation that Republicans have put themselves in with plans to send Mayorkas’s office $363 million in the coming year, up from $336 million this past year.

“Feb 2024, Republicans: ‘Let’s impeach Mayorkas!’ March 2024, Republicans: ‘Let’s give Mayorkas’ office an 8% pay increase!'” Ogles wrote in the post.

As a Senate-confirmed department secretary, Mayorkas himself is on a fixed pay scale and received $246,400 in fiscal 2024. The figure is the same pay as other Cabinet secretaries.

The increase in funding for the DHS secretary’s office means approximately $27 million more funding will be available for use.

But the bill does not break down what exactly that $363 million can be spent on other than that it will go toward the “DHS Office of the Secretary and Executive Management,” according to a spokesman for Ogles.

The DHS did not respond to a request for comment.

A vote on the DHS funding bill, part of a “minibus” of six appropriations bills, is scheduled for Friday. The House will need two-thirds of members to support the deal, making it critical for Democrats to get on board and enough Republicans to back it.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) told the Washington Examiner on Thursday that he would not support the plan because it did not include policy changes to stem the flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico.
