The 2024 Republican presidential field was not impressed with President Joe Biden's address on the wars in Israel and Ukraine.
Biden's chief foe, former President Donald Trump, blasted the speech even before he spoke on Thursday night.

"The horrific catastrophes taking place in Israel as well as the chaos on our Southern Border and in hotspot after hotspot around the world, all have one thing in common: they were caused by Crooked Joe Biden’s deadly combination of incompetence, radicalism, and weakness," Trump's campaign said in a statement. "When Biden gives his Oval Office address tonight, he is desperately hoping Americans will forget that it’s Biden himself who is responsible for these disasters."
After the speech late Thursday night, the campaign sent out a video and said, "The World Was Safer Under President Donald J. Trump," specifically referencing the disastrous American withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, the Ukraine-Russia war, and the prisoner exchange deal between Iran and the United States that released $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds.
On Friday morning, Trump posted another attack against Biden and the Democrats on Truth Social, his social media platform.
"As I successfully fight these Political Opponent Lawsuits, all created and started by Crooked Joe Biden and his group of Radical Left Thugs, I realize how insignificant they are compared to the horror of what is going on with Israel and the Middle East, where thousands of people have so needlessly died, in a war that should have NEVER STARTED, and millions could very easily follow, all due to the highly incompetent Biden Administration and their policies of Weakness and Appeasement (and of being just plain STUPID!)," Trump posted.
Former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, a fierce defender of Israel since the war with Hamas started, blamed Biden for the Middle East conflict. "The shame of it all is that we wouldn’t be in this terrible position if Joe Biden hadn’t been so weak in Afghanistan, so slow in Ukraine, so pandering to Iran, and so absent from the border," she said. "The world is on fire, and America needs strong new leadership to deal with it."
Tell It Like It Is, a super PAC backing former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, released a new 30-second “Dangerous World" ad on Friday that also called for new American leadership. "In a dangerous world, America must lead. And our next president must be up to the challenge, Not distracted by personal issues," a narrator says over images of Biden and Trump. "Experienced, with a proven record of strong leadership. To stand up for democracy, the rule of law abroad and at home. A president who can govern and isn’t afraid of the truth. Chris Christie, President."
Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) told CNN he was "frustrated" by Biden's speech. "Terrorists bombed our ally, Israel, and we heard more about Ukraine than we did our ally Israel," he said. "And the package itself has more money for Ukraine than Israel. I think we would be better off having a single focus on Israel, giving them the resources they need to win this war and then move on to other topics."
Biden's unequivocal support for Israel amid its war with the terrorist group Hamas may be playing well overseas, but on domestic territory, particularly among Republican presidential candidates, the enthusiasm for Biden's foreign policy efforts hasn't been reciprocated.
During a Thursday prime-time address to the nation, Biden sought to link the wars that Israel faces with Hamas with Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, as the latter quickly approaches its 21st month of fighting.
"Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common. They both want to completely annihilate a neighboring democracy — completely annihilate it," Biden said. "Hamas’ stated purpose for existing is the destruction of the state of Israel and the murder of Jewish people. Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people."
"Meanwhile, Putin denies Ukraine has, or ever had, real statehood. He claims the Soviet Union created Ukraine," the president said.
The president's budget office unveiled a request for $61.4 billion for Ukraine, $14.3 billion for Israel, $14 billion for border security, $9.5 billion for humanitarian aid, and $7 billion for countering China's influence in the Indo-Pacific on Friday. The total of $106 billion is about $6 billion more than Democrats previously thought the Biden administration would request.

Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), a long-shot presidential candidate, slammed Biden's foreign policy efforts for leading to multiple international crises. "Americans must remember that Joe Biden’s failed policies and weakness are the cause of these calamitous conflicts across the globe," Burgum said. "His disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan was among the first signals to brutal dictators around the world that the Biden Administration’s irresponsible foreign policy is based on weakness and appeasement. Biden’s anti-US energy policies that ensured Western Europe remained dependent on Russian energy served as a green light for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine."
The war between Israel and Hamas, which started on Oct. 7, has led to at least 4,137 Palestinians and more than 1,400 people in Israel being killed.
