Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich contended that several key problems are plaguing the Democratic Party as it seeks to oppose President Donald Trump, one of which is voters siding with the current president in the impending “cultural civil war.”
Gingrich suggested that neither former Vice President Kamala Harris nor Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), her 2024 running mate, has “a clue about America,” and called both of them “shallow.” The former speaker, who recently released the new book Trump’s Triumph: America’s Greatest Comeback, argued that he sought to portray the divide between Trump and the Democratic Party in his book, and how voters are “increasingly” siding with Trump due to his opposition to “the very values” of the “Obama-Biden system.”

“And it was an Obama-Biden system, not just Biden,” Gingrich explained on Fox News’s Hannity. “That system was racist, it spent money like crazy, it believed in weird values, and I think the American people said, ‘no.’”
Another factor impacting the Democratic Party, Gingrich argued, is the party base’s dishonesty, citing the party’s claim about Medicaid cuts being included in the “big, beautiful bill” is “a plain out lie.” He explained that Congress’s adjustments to Medicaid roles actually remove illegal immigrants and “crooks,” saying it was “beyond” him why Democrats would want to continue allowing these recipients to partake in Medicaid.
The former House speaker went on to state that the Democratic Party’s claims on Medicaid cuts illustrate how “they can’t win any honest debate” on major topics. In comparison, he argued that Trump is able to explain issues in a way that makes sense to voters, which is part of his new book’s focus.

The former speaker’s assessment over the Democratic Party’s opposition to Trump was given on the same night Vice President JD Vance knocked the previous leadership of the nation, claiming “we were actually governed by complete morons.” Vance pointed to the “brittleness” of the nation’s supply chain and the failure by previous leaders to properly address it.
