A group of pro-Palestinian protesters have set up an encampment on George Washington University’s campus.

More than 200 protesters have rallied together, calling on the university to divest from companies tied to Israel and disclose all of its endowments and investments.

At 5 a.m., more than 50 students began pitching tents around the George Washington statue located in University Yard.

The encampment was organized by the DMV Coalition of Students for Justice in Palestine, which represents students from George Washington and other colleges in the D.C. area.

Protests began at Georgetown University at about 10:30 a.m., with demonstrators leaving the campus at around 11:20 a.m. More than 120 Georgetown students, faculty, and staff marched to George Washington’s campus. When they arrived at the encampment, the group shouted, “Palestine will be free” and “There is only one solution, intifada revolution.”

School officials have granted demonstrators permission to protest until 7 p.m.

In response, the rooftops of two residence halls have been closed from 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but your safety and comfort are our top priorities,” Mitchell Hall Community Coordinator Jonathan Irias-Puerto said in an email. “During this time, we kindly ask that you refrain from accessing the rooftop area.”

GW Hillel posted a statement to Instagram affirming its support for Jewish students and that Hillel staff members were “closely monitoring” the protests.

“We say unequivocally that no student’s rights to be safe, to pursue their education, and to be proud Jews should be compromised in response to another student’s actions,” the statement said. “When a cause aligns with terrorist organizations taking pride in these protests and actions, and when language calls for violence against an entire religion and people — this is not a fight for justice, but it is an embrace of hate.”
