"This is an exciting day for the George Washington University Revolutionaries," George Washington University President Mark Wrighton said in a statement. "I am very grateful for the active engagement of our community throughout the development of the new moniker. This process was truly driven by our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and the result is a moniker that broadly reflects our community — and our distinguished and distinguishable GW spirit."
In a press release, the university said it engaged with a number of stakeholders and solicited a wide range of suggestions for what the school should adopt for its new moniker. The university said that through focus groups, surveys, and sample merchandise distribution, "Revolutionaries" won out at every juncture.

“To have 47,000 points of feedback from the GW community is a testament to the pride people have in this institution, and we are proud to offer them a new moniker that will propel us as we move ahead in our third century,” Ellen Moran, vice president for Communications and Marketing at George Washington University, said.
The university says it plans to implement the new team name during the 2023-2024 school year and will unveil branding, logos, and other materials in the coming months.
