Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has been hit with several new fraud-related charges, according to the Department of Justice.

The DOJ unveiled a superseding indictment against Santos on Tuesday, charging him with conspiracy, wire fraud, false statements, falsification of records, aggravated identity theft, and credit card fraud.

FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC CRISES UPEND BIDEN 2020 CAMPAIGN PROMISE OF RETURN TO STABILITY

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) departs federal court, June 30, 2023, in Central Islip, N.Y.

The superseding indictment was announced by Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York; Nicole M. Argentieri, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division; James Smith, assistant director in charge, FBI, New York Field Office; and Anne T. Donnelly, Nassau County district attorney.

“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign," Peace said. "Santos falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen. This Office will relentlessly pursue criminal charges against anyone who uses the electoral process as an opportunity to defraud the public and our government institutions.”

“Santos allegedly led multiple additional fraudulent criminal schemes, lying to the American public in the process. The FBI is committed to upholding the laws of our electoral process. Anyone who attempts to violate the law as part of a political campaign will face punishment in the criminal justice system,” Smith added.

Alarming accusations against Santos came to light soon after his election and before he was sworn into office. The widespread accusations of extensive fraud prompted a House Ethics investigation in March and an initial round of federal indictments in May. He was indicted on 13 counts: seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

The new charges against Santos are likely to further exacerbate his political difficulties, which have plagued him during his time in Congress.

The New York Republican has previously pleaded innocence of all the accusations against him, deriding charges against him as a "witch hunt."

The Washington Examiner has reached out to Santos's team for comment.
