NextImg:Geoff Duncan reiterates his support for Biden over ‘fake Republican’ Trump - Washington Examiner

Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan reiterated his support for President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election and encouraged other Republicans to join him.

Duncan recently published an opinion piece that revealed he would be voting for Biden over former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the election this November. When asked why other Republicans should also support Biden over Trump this November, Duncan stated that Trump is not the future of the Republican Party, and that he did not represent the party when looking back at his presidency.

“Donald Trump’s a fake Republican, he’s proven that over and over and over again,” Duncan said on CNN. “He simply wants the position of president to be powerful, and he’s willing to lie, cheat, and steal for it. And if we’re going to fix this party and go forward, the party that is conservative but not crazy and angry, we‘ve got to do it without Donald Trump. And I know it makes sense to try to elect a Republican to be the president, but if we can get past Donald Trump, have a Republican-controlled Congress, we can have a firewall in place and then we can take the next four years to fix our party and get a legitimate candidate forward that can lead us in the right direction.”

Duncan explained that many Republican voters are frustrated with Trump and the control he has over the party, and argued that these voters need to “take our medicine” to move on from the former president.

“And it’s painful, it hurts, it sometimes maybe doesn‘t seem like it makes sense, but if we‘re going to heal, we‘ve got to move past Donald Trump,” Duncan said. “He‘s taking us to the bottom of the ocean and some of us don‘t even realize it.”

Despite his view, Trump continues to lead Biden in polls of registered voters.

Duncan is one of several Republicans who have said they will not support Trump, with Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president and former 2024 presidential candidate, being one of them. Pence’s choice to not support Trump comes after he signed a pledge by the Republican National Committee to support the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who also ran for president in the Republican Party’s primary, has similarly chosen to not adhere to this agreement, stating in March that she would “make what decision I want to make” regarding an endorsement. She added that she has always had “serious concerns” about the former president.

Should Trump become the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, it would set the stage for a rematch between him and Biden, the two candidates for their respective parties in 2020. Recent polling has indicated that a hypothetical rematch between Trump and Biden would be very close, with Trump just ahead of voters saying they plan to vote while Biden is ahead among registered voters.
