Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) claimed Californians will suffer the cost of Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s (D-CA) “far-left, progressive vision” on immigration.

Since voters made Donald Trump the winner of the 2024 presidential election, Newsom emerged as a leader among Democratic governors, revealing their plans to protect their sanctuary status by defending the immigrants living among them. Trump’s plan to pursue mass deportations has been met with criticisms of its cost, but California is facing a much larger cost, according to Fallon.

“So if Gavin Newsom wants to go the other way, let him,” Fallon said. “The California government can’t even pay their bills right now. They’re going to incur the great cost to fulfill his very far-left, progressive vision. And it’s just going to further indebt Californians.”

TRUMP ENDING CBP ONE MIGRANT APP COULD HAVE UNINTENDED BORDER CONSEQUENCES

According to Trump’s border czar appointee Tom Homan, it could cost as much as $86 billion to enact these deportations. However, Fallon cited the Federation for American Immigration Reform’s estimate that it costs the U.S. $150 billion every year to facilitate illegal immigrants, so the estimate is a welcome price reduction on the issue. Meanwhile, California Legislature’s nonpartisan fiscal adviser claimed the state’s budget is “roughly balanced,” but any increase in spending could result in a deficit.

Newsom is largely speculated to emerge as a major Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, which could be prompting his stance on immigration. Border security was a top priority for all voters, especially those who live in these sanctuary cities in California. Newsom’s term as governor will end in 2027, leaving him plenty of time to campaign for the next presidential cycle.

“So, I welcome his entry to the national stage in 2028 because he’ll be abjectly rejected,” Fallon said.

Newsom’s appeal to protect these immigrants from Trump’s plans is not likely to win over voters. A report from Blueprint found that nearly a quarter of voters ranked the border as their top issue of the Nov. 5 election. It was in the top three issues voters had overall in choosing Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.
