Gas prices remain high but could be showing signs of improvement.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the economy will be on voters' minds. And the price at the pumps is one of the most direct pieces of evidence as to how the economy is faring.

The national average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas on Tuesday is $3.854, below Monday's price of $3.865. The price was $3.862 a week ago, according to AAA.

Here is how certain states and areas fare in their prices at the pumps. To see how expensive gas is in each state, click here.

Maryland

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Maryland is $3.809, beneath yesterday's price of $3.811. One week ago, the price stood at $3.800.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Virginia has dropped to $3.662, below Monday's price of $3.672. Last week, the price was $3.664.

Washington, D.C.

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Washington, D.C., is down Tuesday at $4.042. Monday's price was $4.044, and last week, it was $4.015.

California

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in California keeps rising and stands at $5.260 on Tuesday. On Monday, the price was $5.255, and one week ago, it was $5.168.

New York

In New York, the average price is $3.918, 2 cents down from Monday. Last week, it was $3.921.

Texas

The average price in Texas dropped on Tuesday to $3.465. On Monday, the price was $3.475, and last week, it was $3.459.
