Gas prices are continuing their upward trajectory this summer.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the economy will be on the minds of voters. And the price at the pumps is one of the most direct pieces of evidence as to how the economy is faring.

The national average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas on Thursday is $3.875, above Wednesday's price of $3.873. The price was $3.828 a week ago, according to AAA.

Here is how certain states and areas fare in their prices at the pumps. To see how expensive gas is in each state, click here.

Maryland

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Maryland is $3.811, above Wednesday's $3.807 price. One week ago, the price stood at $3.791.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Virginia has risen to $3.678, above yesterday's price of $3.668 and last week's $3.661.

Washington, D.C.

In a reversal from recent days, the average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Washington, D.C., has dropped Thursday to $4.015.
On Wednesday, it was $4.022. Last week, it was $3.983.

California

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in California rises with no end in sight, currently standing at a lofty $5.182. On Wednesday, the price was $5.175, and one week ago, it was $5.090.

New York

In New York, the average price is $3.927, the same price as Wednesday. Last week, it was $3.900.

The average price in Texas has risen to $3.493. On Wednesday, the price was $3.482, and last week, it was $3.450.
