The majority of American households own a car, and what comes with that privilege is the responsibility of buying gas.

As the 2024 presidential election slowly comes clearer into view, the economy will be on the mind of most, if not all, voters. The price at the pumps is one of the most direct and day-to-day pieces of evidence as to how the economy is faring.

As of Thursday, the national average for a gallon of regular-grade gas is $3.574, up from $3.561 on Wednesday and $3.536 the week before, according to AAA. The numbers over the past few days suggest the prices are on a steadily upward trajectory.

Maryland

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Maryland is $3.494, lower than the national average. The price was $3.486 the day before, and one week ago, the price was $3.457.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Virginia is $3.336, below the national average. The price is up from $3.328 the day before and $3.316 last week.

Washington, D.C.

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Washington, D.C., is $3.644, higher than the national average. The day before, it was $3.639, and the week before, it was $3.615.

California

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in California is well above the national average at $4.814. It was just a tick lower the day before, at $4.811, and was $4.788 a week ago.

In New York, the current average is $3.688, compared with $3.673 the day before and $3.656 this time last week.

Texas

The average price in Texas sits well below the national average at $3.134, compared with $3.121 the day before and $3.081 the week before.
