NextImg:Gas prices are already down under Trump - Washington Examiner

Call it a coincidence? Maybe it’s beginner’s luck? Or perhaps it’s just another example of “promises made, promises kept”? Whatever the reason, one week into his second term, gas prices are already lower under President Donald Trump

Consider it another gold star for Trump’s first week and the latest installment of “Making America Great Again.”

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas has dropped steadily since Trump took office. As of Monday, it is $3.122, according to AAA. This is a decrease from Friday, when the cost of regular gas was slightly over $3.13 per gallon. It is also cheaper than the price for a gallon of regular gas on Sunday when it was $3.123. And, most interestingly, a gallon of regular is now less expensive than on former President Joe Biden’s last day in office, when it was $3.125.

Granted, this is an extremely small sample size, but it’s progress nonetheless. It’s encouraging to see gas prices trending in the right direction for the country’s drivers. There is still much work to be done, of course, as prices remain too high overall. While today’s gas prices are less expensive than on Biden’s last day, a gallon of regular gas costs more than a month ago, when it was $3.034, and a year ago, when it was $3.103.

Furthermore, with the threat of tariffs looming over the country’s economic geopolitical relations, it’s possible that gas prices will increase, and quickly, if implemented. However, that is all speculative at the moment. Currently, gas prices are down, and the decrease has come just days after Trump declared a national energy emergency through an executive order.

Energy prices, and subsequently the cost of gas, were two key matters he focused on in his inaugural address. Trump touted the country’s fuel resources, emphasizing that the United States has the “largest amount of oil and gas” of any country globally and affirmed that “we are going to use it.”

“We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help us to do it,” Trump said.

However, more than just future success and wealth, Trump acknowledged the present, explicitly mentioning the country’s current high fuel costs. He stressed how high energy prices continue to threaten the country’s “national and economic security” and present significant financial challenges for “those living on low — and fixed incomes.”

“Caused by the harmful and shortsighted policies of the previous administration, our Nation’s inadequate energy supply and infrastructure causes and makes worse the high energy prices that devastate Americans, particularly those living on low- and fixed-incomes,” said the national energy emergency executive order. “An affordable and reliable domestic supply of energy is a fundamental requirement for the national and economic security of any nation.”

Trump realizes the importance of affordable domestic energy prices. He prioritizes the people in the country instead of rogue interpretations of agenda-driven science and consistently inconsistent climate change predictions.

It’s only been a week. But so far, so good.
