Universal/Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie dethroned Disney’s record for the all-time biggest box-office opening of an animated film.

With its nearly $205 million in domestic sales and $173 million in international sales, The Super Mario Bros. Movie beat the previous opening records set by Pixar’s Incredibles 2’s domestic debut and Frozen 2’s global opening, according to box-office reports.

The film, which is based on the popular Nintendo video game series, also bested Disney’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to become the biggest domestic opening of 2023.

Among these records, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was also noted for becoming the highest-grossing five-day launch of all time. It further topped Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as the most successful video game adaptation.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s PG rating is being highlighted as a cultural indicator.

“Adapting a video game to a big-screen movie where you’re going after adults or teenagers or gamers — they’re a very tough audience,” media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “Despite having so many options at home — so many other options outside of the home — for kids and families ... this became the go-to event for the past week for families and their kids.”

Dergarabedian added that the film’s success would pave the way for “more openness” among studios to craft family-friendly PG-rated films.

John Leguizamo, the actor who played Luigi in the 1993 film adaptation of the video game, slammed the film for not including a Latin character.

“Like I was groundbreaking, and then they stopped the groundbreaking. They messed up the inclusion. They dis-included. Just cast some Latin folk!" Leguizamo said.
