Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) slammed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his alleged mishandling of the border crisis, accusing him of "doing the bidding" of Mexican drug cartels.
The heated exchange occurred during Wednesday's House Judiciary Committee hearing on the “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.” The Florida Republican accused Mayorkas of failing to answer his questions and failing to secure the border, and he criticized U.S. Customs and Border Protection's One app.

Toward the end of the exchange, Gaetz grilled Mayorkas on whether or not he believed that Mexico is an ally in the fight against illegal immigration, to which the DHS secretary responded in the affirmative.
"It's hilarious and somewhat troubling that you say that," Gaetz retorted. "Because it’s like, I’m looking at the El Chapo trial, where President Nieto took a $100 billion bribe with the Sinaloa cartel. Do you think that the subsequent presidents following Nieto were not offered a bribe by the cartel or didn’t take the bribe?"
"Congressman, I disagree with everything you just said," Mayorkas responded.
In response, Gaetz brought his greatest accusation yet, accusing the DHS secretary of doing the work of the cartels.

"You can disagree all you want, but what you won’t provide is any number," Gaetz said. "When you sit there and just kind of ostensibly disagree without any facts, it shows people what the real gig is. The Mexican government is captive to the cartels. They are doing the bidding of the cartels, and based on your response today, so are you."
Gaetz has been an outspoken critic of Mayorkas since his appointment, laying much of the blame for the border crisis on the Biden administration official.
