NextImg:Gabe Kaminsky details dark money funding of group that sued to remove Trump from Colorado ballot

The Washington Examiner's Gabe Kaminsky elaborated on his investigative report into the funds that helped remove Donald Trump from the Colorado ballot.

Kaminsky appeared for an interview on the Morning Wire podcast that aired Saturday to discuss the dark money received by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the group that sued Trump for his alleged involvement on Jan. 6. CREW accused the former president of violating the 14th Amendment, which ultimately led to his removal from the ballot, a case which will now be heard by the Supreme Court. According to Kaminsky, CREW has very close donor ties to Democratic megadonors.

THE HAPPY EXPANSION OF SCHOOL CHOICE SHOULD CONTINUE IN 2024

"While this organization has long positioned itself as an ethics group that aims to fight 'secret money influence in the United States,' it actually has also taken money over the years — something the Left often assails," Kaminsky said of CREW. "It’s taken millions of dollars from groups linked to George Soros, the wealthy philanthropist, and also millions of dollars from donor-advised funds, which are essentially entities that allow wealthy liberal donors to pour money into charities that have sort of opaque funding structures."

Kaminsky originally broke the story detailing the funds after he examined CREW's tax forms. Between 2017 and 2022, the organization received $2.85 million from the Soros-backed Foundation to Promote Open Society, over $440,000 from the Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Fund, and $5.9 million from the Fidelity Investments Charitable Gift Fund. The coverage reveals the "partisan play" behind efforts to remove Trump from the ballot, according to Kaminsky.

"Really the main thing that we found is that they take cash from some of the largest and most influential left-leaning entities that certainly share significant ties to the Democratic Party," Kaminsky said. "Being one: New Venture Fund, which is one of the largest 501(c)(3) charities currently under investigation by the Washington, D.C., attorney general. It is managed by an LLC called Arabella Advisors, one of the largest Democratic linked money networks in the United States — actually the largest Democrat network in the United States."

Additionally, CREW is currently fundraising on ActBlue, which is a Democratic-leaning software platform.
