Former Star Wars actress Gina Carano criticized the Walt Disney Company for firing her in a new interview, arguing the company had a double standard when she shared her political views.
Carano was fired from her role on The Mandalorian television series in February 2021, after she posted on Instagram that Jews in the Holocaust were beaten up simply for their religious beliefs, with the post questioning, “How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?” Some took Carano’s post as a comparison between Republicans to Jews, though she has denied comparing the two.
“It was so absurd, my cancellation, which is why the people that were really paying attention were like ‘oh my word, this is how aggressive this is,’” Carano said in a podcast with former ESPN anchor Sage Steele.
Carano said she had never shared her views on controversial topics prior to 2020, noting that her co-stars were “easily allowed” to share their personal views. She added that she chose to ask questions about the current political landscape, but that people were still making countless accusations against her, ranging from racism to homophobia.
In her discussion with Steele, Carano said she feels like “a normal person in the middle” who had been asking controversial questions before other people, including questions about the COVID-19 vaccine and how effective face masks were in preventing the spread of the pandemic.
Steele agreed, noting that she had asked several controversial statements towards the first couple years of the pandemic. Prior to leaving ESPN in August 2023, she was suspended by the network over statements regarding former President Barack Obama and the network’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
Disney’s lawyers filed a motion to throw out Carano’s lawsuit on Tuesday, arguing the company had “a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech.”

In an interview last month, Carano said that the focus on her lawsuit is to clear her name and being able to “just getting on with my life.” She also thanked X owner Elon Musk for backing her lawsuit, stating that he is using his wealth “to fight massive injustice battles.”
In March, Carano announced that Straightwire Entertainment would be representing her going forward in her work in the entertainment industry. Her last agency, UTA, had dropped her when she was fired by Disney.
