Israel's former prime minister Naftali Bennett called for Hamas to be destroyed as his family shelters from their attacks.

Bennett appeared on Fox News to issue an update on the situation in Israel after Hamas fired thousands of rockets and also sent dozens of fighters into Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday celebrating the annual cycle of the Torah scroll reading. The resulting death toll is roughly 200, while an increasing number of people in the area are being captured as well.

"It's time for Israel to fight back. It's time for Israel to destroy Hamas," Bennett said Saturday. "It's time to eradicate Hamas."

The former prime minister said his own family is in a shelter from the oncoming attacks. Meanwhile, Israel has hundreds of thousands of Israel Defense Force soldiers at the ready to "strike back and strike tough," according to Bennett. A counter-strike on Palestine has already reached a proportional death toll.

"I want to say one word to the people of the United States, you know, knowing that you guys are out there for us, and you've got our back, knowing that the American people stand behind Israel means a lot," Bennett said. "So, we'll do the job, but we know you're there, and I want to thank you for that."

Heads of state from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, and India have issued statements of support for Israel while condemning the surprise attack.

Israel last received rocket fire in January, when the Islamic Jihad in Gaza fired two rockets toward Israel after a raid of a refugee camp by Israeli troops resulted in seven Palestinian gunmen and two civilians killed. These two rockets caused no casualties. Israel responded with air strikes on Gaza at the time.
