Former speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy believes his successor, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), is safe for now.

Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) has filed a motion to vacate Johnson over the passage of a $1.2 trillion government funding bill, but McCarthy said it’s nothing to worry about on Sunday.

“The one advice I would give to the conference and to the speaker is — do not be fearful of a motion to vacate,” McCarthy said on CBS News’s Face the Nation. “I do not think they could do it again. That was surely based on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) trying to stop an ethics complaint. I don’t think the Democrats would go along with it. Focus on the country, focus on the job you’re supposed to do.”

McCarthy further encouraged Johnson to “do it fearlessly.”

Gaetz, who is under investigation for allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of funds, has strongly denied McCarthy’s allegation.

In any case, McCarthy’s prediction that his successor is safe is supported by the fact that Greene has found few takers so far in her effort to oust Johnson.

“I sure hope nobody vacates the Speaker again,” Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) wrote, including a clip of male celebrities modeling into a camera with the caption, “MTG.”

During his CBS interview, McCarthy said chaos within the House GOP is causing some of the defections from his party, and called for it to end.

“They’ve got to move through this, put the country first, and be able to move on,” he said. “I think they’re able to do that. Speaker Johnson is doing the very best job he can.”
