Former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) in her pursuit of the state’s top office.

Whitman, who co-chairs the independent Forward Party with Andrew Yang and endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris for president, rebuffed Sherrill’s opponent, Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, with the endorsement.

“She’s the right person for the job,” Whitman said of Sherrill in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’ve met with her. She knows how to organize. She knows how to manage and to lead… Beyond that, it would be really nice to have another woman.”

After ousting former Democratic Gov. James Florio, Whitman became New Jersey’s first female governor from 1994 to 2001. She also served under former President George W. Bush as his Environmental Protection Agency administrator from January 2001 to June 2003.

Whitman has been known as a moderate Republican throughout her political career and opposed President Donald Trump’s candidacy in 2016. She backed former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in 2013 and former Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno in 2017 against Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ).

Whitman said Ciattarelli would “bring MAGA in full force” to New Jersey.

“Frankly, Jack has changed from the person I knew decades ago,” she told the outlet.

Ciattarelli backed Whitman in her failed 1990 Senate campaign and 1993 gubernatorial campaign, and made campaign donations.

Whitman indicated she would back Sherrill on Wednesday after the Democrat won a crowded primary.

“I’m delighted that New Jersey has the opportunity to elect another woman as governor – congratulations, @MikieSherrill !” Whitman posted on X.

Ciattarelli and Sherrill are set to face off in the November general election after both triumphed in their respective primaries. They’ve already taken their opening salvos at each other.

“A state like this is not going to be led by a Trump lackey like Jack Ciattarelli,” Sherrill said to supporters after winning the Democratic nomination on Wednesday night.

Ciattarelli has since attacked Sherrill for supporting Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), who was indicted in her Immigration and Customs Enforcement prison case, and for supporting the head of a New Jersey teachers union “who just lit $40 million of your dues money on fire these past few months.”
