Former federal Judge J. Michael Luttig claimed that former President Donald Trump has destroyed the Republican Party, and he made a variety of other claims.

Luttig made the declaration in an interview with CNN, during which he painted an apocalyptic vision of the state of the country. He advised former Vice President Mike Pence not to reject the certification of the results of the 2020 election, then he testified in front of the Jan. 6 committee. Luttig has since continued to ramp up his statements in characterizing the United States as in increasingly dire straights.

“A political party is a collection and assemblage of individuals who share a set of beliefs and principles and policy views about the United States of America. Today, there is no such shared set of beliefs and values and principles or even policy views as within the Republican party for America,” he declared.

Because there's no Republican Party, he added, "American democracy is in grave peril.”

He also doubled down on his claim made before the Jan. 6 committee last year that Trump and his supporters pose “a clear and present danger to American democracy," saying he believes Trump is an even greater threat, “more so today.”

Though often cited as a conservative, Luttig said in the interview that he is "not a political person" and that "frankly, I don't care about the Republican Party at all."

Trump remains highly popular among Republicans, and most polls put his share of the Republican vote for the 2024 presidential candidacy at over 50%.
