A eulogy written by former President Gerald Ford was shared at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral — even though Ford has been dead for nearly 20 years.
Despite Ford losing the White House to Carter in 1976, the two built a strong relationship. Ford’s son Steven Ford read the eulogy left behind after his father’s death in 2006.
Gerald Ford won’t be the only person speaking beyond the grave. Carter’s vice president, Walter Mondale, also had a eulogy he wrote for Carter read by his son, Ted Mondale. Walter Mondale died in 2021 at the age of 93. He was born four years after Carter.
“I think my father wrote this eulogy in 2015 after Carter was diagnosed with brain cancer because, you know, 90-year-olds usually don’t last very long,” said Ted Mondale, who didn’t know about the eulogy until after his father died.
Carter died on Dec. 29 at age 100 — making him the longest-living president by six years. Former President George H.W. Bush was the second longest-living president. He passed away at age 94 last June.
The state funeral for Carter will also include eulogies from Jason Carter, Carter’s grandson, and Stuart E. Eizenstat, a White House adviser to Jimmy Carter.
Joshua Carter, Jimmy Carter’s other grandson, will also offer a reading. Andrew Young, who served as Jimmy Carter’s ambassador to the United States, will deliver the homily.
