Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can use their benefits at most grocery stores, including in major chains such as Amazon.

Food stamp recipients can use the SNAP Retailer Locator to find a store that accepts the benefits, which includes stores such as Giant and Safeway.

Some stores, including Amazon, Aldi via Instacart, Giant, and certain Safeway locations in Washington, D.C., allow residents to use their SNAP benefits to order food items online and then have them delivered to their residences. However, SNAP benefits cannot be used for delivery charges.

A shopper pushes his cart past a display of packaged meat in a grocery store Sunday, May 10, 2020, in southeast Denver.

Other outlets, including Safeway, allow beneficiaries to reserve food items online that would then be picked up and paid for through the EBT card in person.

Shoppers can use their SNAP electronic benefits transfer cards to buy food items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, cereals, seeds, and plants used to produce food. Other foods, such as snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, can also be purchased using SNAP benefits.

Items that cannot be purchased using SNAP benefits include alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, tobacco, vitamins and supplements, prepared or hot foods, and live animals, except for shellfish.

The amount of money that a SNAP recipient receives every month will vary depending on how many people are in their household. A household of one gets $281, while a household of eight will receive $1,691. These SNAP benefits are given to recipients within the first 10 days of the month.

The debt ceiling deal that Congress passed last week would result in several modifications to SNAP eligibility. This would include pushing work requirements from able-bodied adults beginning at 18 years old and under 50 years old to able-bodied adults under 54 years old.

Additionally, increasing the age for work requirements will likely reduce the number of food stamp recipients. Recipients of food stamps receive an estimated $169 in monthly benefits on average, according to the Department of Agriculture.
