SNAP benefits in Virginia can be used to purchase "food or food products meant to be eaten by people," along with seeds and food-producing plants, among other things. Those using food stamps at stores may not use them to purchase nonfood items, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, gardening items, cleaning or paper products, pet food, or prepared hot foods, per the state.
Food stamps are loaded onto a Virginia EBT card, or electronic benefit transfer card, so that beneficiaries may use it at eligible stores. More information on the program can be found on the state's website.
