Indiana residents have three more days until payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program wrap up for September.

The Hoosier State sends out food stamps on odd days of the month from the fifth to the 23rd. Recipients usually see their SNAP benefits reloaded on the same day each month, and the date depends on the first letter of the recipient’s last name.

In Indiana, the maximum payment for a household of one is $281, and the maximum payment for a household of eight is $1,691. For each additional member after eight, $211 is added to the payment.

Eligible households with last names A through V should have already received their payments. SNAP recipients with last names starting with W, X, Y, and Z will collect their payments on Saturday — the final payment date for September.

Those who become eligible for food stamps either on Sept. 23 or after their last name's date passes can still collect SNAP benefits for the month of September and do not need to wait for the next round in October.

The average payment per household member per month is $182 in Indiana. About 617,600 people, or 9% of the population, receive food stamps.

To qualify for food stamps, people must meet a number of requirements, including household and income thresholds.

Benefits are loaded on an electronic benefit transfer card, called a "Hoosier Works card" in Indiana. SNAP can be used to buy grocery items such as meat and poultry products, bread and cereal, and seeds for growing food. Food stamps cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.
