Indiana will wrap up its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for September in nine days, distributing payments to qualified low-income families.

SNAP, known as food stamps, is sent out in Indiana monthly, from the 3rd to the 23rd, according to the 2023 federal schedule. Recipients usually see their SNAP benefits reloaded on the same day each month, with the date depending on the first letter of the client’s last name.

To qualify for food stamps, people must fall under a number of requirements, depending on the household and income threshold. In Indiana, the maximum payment for a household of one is $281, and the maximum payment that can be issued by the program is $1,691 for a household of eight, according to the state Family and Social Services Administration. After eight, SNAP adds $211 for each additional member.

Benefits are loaded on an electronic benefits transfer card, known as the Hoosier Works card in Indiana. The date recipients will see their payments depends on the first three letters of their last name. SNAP can be used to buy grocery items such as meat and poultry products, bread and cereal, and seeds for growing food. SNAP cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.
